Mother to Nehemiah.

Sierra, age 24, is currently a stay-at-home mom, but recently finished nursing school, so her time home will soon be coming to a bittersweet end.

How has anxiety affected you since becoming a mother?

The anxiety I've dealt with since becoming a mom has been completely overwhelming. I grew up with little support from my actual parents, and because I strive to be sure that my son knows I’m supportive and his comfort when he needs it, it sometimes can make me anxious about making sure I’m a good parent and giving him whatever support he needs to prosper.

I also like to think some of my anxiety stems from things I really cannot facilitate, like medical conditions. Miah has eczema and is prone to ear infections. I tend to get anxious behind those things because not only is it a stressor on his body and mind, but I sometimes feel I'm the only one handling these conditions properly while they are exacerbated. I feel like no one will make sure he’s going to thrive like I will ( which is not true!). I often let my anxieties overwhelm me, and I’ll cancel everything, call off, and put my phone on Do Not Disturb in order to bring both of us comfort and serenity.
