Mija, age 30, is a single mom from Anchorage, Alaska. She has a background in mental health rehabilitation and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wilberforce University. Her passion in life is to help people, especially the younger generation, because they are the future.
WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOURNEY INTO MOTHERHOOD?
I was diagnosed with infertility caused by Polycystic Ovarian syndrome at the age of 18. I was told I would never be a mom before I was sexually active. I felt devastated largely because I always dreamed of being a mom. For many years I would tell people I didn't want kids to cover up my pain of not being able to have them. I tried for many years to prove doctors wrong and ultimately scheduled an appointment with a fertility specialist. My fertility specialist was ranked one of the top specialist in the region. I had hope for once!
After a year of treatments I felt defeated by my specialist telling me, “IVF is your only option.” I gave up on my dreams of being a mother, which is why I felt God put me on this earth. June 2021 I missed a period which was normal for me and a friend insisted I take a test. I was shocked to realize I was carrying life inside of me. My dream in life has always been to have a child of my own, and after 12 years of infertility, God blessed my womb with a daughter. The rest was “Herstory.”
